A fouled EGR valve will diminish the performance of your Ford. The EGR valve is an integral part of how your emissions systems works. If you have changed your oxygen sensor and are still not getting the mileage and power out of your engine that you are used to, chances are your EGR valve also needs to be replaced. Some Fords have "trouble codes" that will specifically tell you that the valve needs to be replaced. All Ford models should have their EGR valves replaced on the same maintenance schedule specified as the oxygen sensor (about every 12,000 miles). The process to install a Ford EGR valve is simple and will take you about a half hour to remove the old and install the new.

Instructions
things you'll need:
- Ford owner's manual
- Socket wrench
- Socket set
- Metal paint scraper
- EGR valve gasket
- EGR valve
-
- 1 Park your Ford on a level area and engage the parking brake. Open the hood and disconnect the negative battery cable, pull it away from the battery so if it moves it will not connect to the battery.
- 2 Remove the vacuum hose from the EGR valve. Consult your owner's manual for the exact location of the valve but generally it will be on one of the sides of the engine block coming out from the intake manifold. The vacuum hose will pull off the EGR valve.
- 3 If your engine is a 4.6L, remove the nut and brake booster bracket that the valve passes through. On the 5.4L Ford engine, remove the nuts holding the DPFE Sensor with your socket wrench and pull the sensor to one side. You should be able to see the EGR valve clearly, it will look like a short piece of hard plastic tubing will a silver "dish" on top.
- 4 Pull the tube connecting the top of the EGR valve to the exhaust manifold off.
- 5 Remove the EGR valve mounting bolts with your socket wrench and pull the valve from the intake manifold.
- 6 Using a thin metal paint scraper, make sure the old gasket that sat between the EGR valve and the intake manifold is completely removed.
- 7 Lay the new EGR valve gasket into position and insert the new valve into the intake manifold. Re-install the EGR valve mounting bolts and hand tighten. Now, re-connect the tubes and hoses that you removed and replace the brake booster (if necessary). Reconnect the negative battery cable and close the hood.
