How to Remove the Radio in a Ford Escape

Ford introduced the Escape in 2001; the small SUV was designed in a joint-venture with Mazda. Removing the radio is drastically different between the two Escape body styles (2001 to 2007 or 2008 to 2010). The later models require minor dash disassembly. If you have a 2007 or older Ford Escape, please see the "Tips" section. The process for removing the radio is also applicable to the Mazda Tribute and the Mercury Mariner.

Moderate

Instructions

things you'll need:

  • Pliers
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • TORX screwdriver
  • Ford radio hook tools (2001 to 2007)
    • 1
Loosen the negative battery cable (black) and remove it from the battery.
    • 2
Grasp the air vent panel above the radio and unclip it from the dash. Disconnect the electrical connection (radio display and clock) from behind the air vent panel.
    • 3
Remove the two Phillips screws above the radio (visible with the air vent panel removed).
    • 4
Grasp the panel below the radio (iPod jack and power outlet) and unclip it. Disconnect the two harnesses from behind the panel.
    • 5
Remove the two Phillips screws visible with the panel removed.
    • 6
Slide the entire radio and climate control panel out. Remove the bolt (8-millimeter) from the passenger's side of the radio to detach the ground strap.
    • 7
Unplug the wiring harnesses from the rear, and then unplug the antenna cable. Turn the radio around to access the rear. Remove the four TORX screws mounting the climate control panel to the radio. With these removed, you can slide the radio away from the panel.

Tips & Warnings

  • To remove the radio in a 2001 to 2007 Ford Escape, you will need Ford radio hook tools (2) or an aftermarket equivalent. Insert the hooks into the holes on the side of the radio and push outward to unhinge them. Pull the radio out.
